So, I’m doing an experiment on a battery cell together with a fellow student at the moment, but the cell needs a resting period of 3 hours between tests. And to make things worse, we can’t leave the experiment room because the setup has to stay attended, which is getting quite boring. So oppo, ask me anything!
Avantime for your time:

How badly do you want an Avantime? Because for me the answer is “very”.

Is your battery test hazardous?

So very much, that I wanted to check the prices on them this morning when I saw one was parked at our university, which is a rarity even over here in the Netherlands. It was exactly the same as the one in the picture.

It could kinda be, if some error occurs in the setup, or something unexpected occurs in the battery chemistry. However it should be non-destructive.

Batteries can be surprising.
Our company’s battery lab had a a fire in the last year while doing a safe test with a very safe battery type. The tested battery was inside a draft chamber that worked quite long after the fire started. That helped to vent out most of the hazardous gasses and only couple of lab rooms were out of order for several months. The other option could have been putting the whole building out of use for a year...
The reason why the battery failed couldn’t be found. Now they are a bit more careful supervising their tests. I do believe that they still leave their tests unattended as we don’t have personnel to watch them continuously during the long tests.

That’s why university wants us to stay with the setup, since that way we can prevent weird things that happen from going wrong by cutting the power for example. Luckily we are only testing with a relatively small single cell, so the risk is quite low, but then again they are Chinese, so nobody knows how well they are made.

Have you ever seen an Avantime that wasn’t blue?

Yes, I’ve seen a purple one once. But when I was just searching the classifieds, there are 8 for sale over here, of which only one is blue, 5 are purple-ish black, one is mid-grey and one is dark green.

Interesting. It wasn’t officially sold here but the few I’ve seen have always been blue. Except for the red one.
